Second Class C

Requires 1 of boiler experience

Boiler class: Low-pressure boiler

Maximum HP in charge (chief engineer): 100

Maximum HP as shift engineer: 100

50 questions on the Second Class C exam

Two-year license fee: $30 or $45 if your previous license expired.

  • Minimum passing grade for all exams is always 70%.
  • Waiting period to retest after failed is exam is always 30 days.
  • Additional licenses exist including Boat Master, Historical, and various provisional licenses.
  • Must apply at least 15 days before expecting to take the exam and once your application is approved by the commissioner, you must take the exam within one year of the date you applied.
  • The commissioner may require continuing education prior to renewal of any license.
  • All engineers must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Educational offset may be available instead of a portion of operating experience
  • All applicants for licensure must provide documentation of operating experience for the level of class/grade applied
